The Townsend painting captures the fine details of a bucolic scene overlooking Barclay Pond and the setting of the Esopus Bend Nature Preserve as viewed from Barclay Heights. Hudson River School of Art aspects are evident in the dramatic setting verlooking the Catskill Mountains, the luminous use of light, and the placement of human figures symbolically connecting a wild and varied landscape with civilized life.
The original oil painting currently hangs on public view in Saugerties Village Hall. Although the date 1830 appears on the frame (the painting was donated to the Village by the Townsend family in 1922), the Saugerties Historical Society has the original sketches of the scene done by Townsend in 1851.
Esopus Creek Conservancy, Inc. gratefully acknowledges the cooperation of the Saugerties Village Board of Trustees in permitting this reproduction of the original painting. Special thanks also go to photographer Michael Saporito, printer Eric Richards, artist Nancy Campbell, and John Klimowicz of The English Garden for framing.
All proceeds benefit Esopus Creek Conservancy, Inc. For additional information please contact our donation coordinator.
