Adventure in a Winter Wonderland

On a clear, crisp, sunny day with snow blanketing the ground, Esopus Bend Nature Preserve becomes a winter wonderland for adventure. Nature presents an inviting environment for discovery by you and your child. Animal tracks in the snow entice visitors to discover their origin. Novice and avid birders are delighted by the variety of birds wintering on the preserve.

Last winter, Esopus Bend became an outdoor classroom for a Life Science class offered by Saugerties Art Lab, a nonprofit organization that provides free and low-cost programs to the youth of Saugerties and the surrounding area.

Youngsters scoped the preserve for animal tracks, examined the markings, recorded their findings in a journal and then discussed what they observed, all under the tutelage of Saugerties High School teacher, Dennis Scalla. During childhood, experiences like this can create a lifelong awareness and appreciation of the natural world. To find out more about Life Science classes, go to the Saugerties Art Lab website.
