The board of directors, along with a cadre of volunteers, is involved in a variety of areas. Here are some highlights:

2008

  • Autumn Nature Walk at Esopus Bend on Saturday, October 25 at 8:00 a.m. For details, check back in September  in the News Room
  • Autumn Tree Identification Walk at Esopus Bend on Sunday, September 28 from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Details are in the News Room
  • Hudson River Valley Ramble at Esopus Bend on Sunday, September 13 from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Details are in the News Room
  • Animal Tracking Adventure at Esopus Bend on Sunday, August 24 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Go to the  News Room  and scroll down for details.
  • Kayak and Canoe Tour scheduled for August 17 IS CANCELED.

  • Breeding Birds and Butterflies Field Trip on Saturday, June 28. Click on News Room and scroll down.
  • Decks and Docks on the Esopus, ECC's first annual fundraiser, is on Sunday, June 1.
  • Spring Nature Walk in Saugerties, co-sponsored by ECC and the John Burroughs Natural History Society, is on Saturday, April 26. 
  • Birding Field Trip, co-sponsored by the ECC and the John Burroughs Natural History Society, is scheduled for Saturday, February, 23 starting at 8:00 a.m.
  • Animal Tracking Adventure is scheduled for Sunday, February 17 starting at 9:00 a.m. 
  • Animal Tracking Adventure in the Snow is scheduled for Sunday, January 13 from 9:00 a.m. - noon at Esopus Bend Nature Preserve.Winter Bird Count at Esopus Bend Nature Preserve is scheduled for Saturday, January 5 starting at 5:30 a.m. For details and to registger, go to our News Room.

 2007

  • An urgent request for Work Party Volunteers at Esopus Bend on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4 starting at 9:00 a.m. has been made by ECC Stewardship and Land Management Chair Chris Florsch. For all the details go to our News Room..
  • ECC is co-sponsoring a conference, Preserving Your Land, on Saturday, November 10 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m at SUNY Ulster, Cotttekill Road in Stone Ridge, New York. The cost of $15 includes breakfast and lunch.   •  Guided birding field trips, nature hikes, butterfly walks, animal tracking in the snow, tours of the Esopus Bend shoreline, kayak and canoe races, environmental presentations, tours of the preserve for scouts and other youth groups are some of the events offered throughout the year. Details about our events are posted in the Newsroom.
  • The ECC participated in the Land Trust Alliance Conference on Saturday, April 21 where ECC Education Committee members,  Saugerties teachers Mary Bishop and Michael Cooper, and Aaron Bennett, director of education for the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development  presented a workshop entitled, Nature Preserve as Classroom. To learn more about ECC's initiative, Nature Preserve as Classroom, go to our Newsroom and scroll down. 
  • The Board of Directors adopted its first strategic plan in 2006.
  •  A biodiversity study and mapping of Esopus Bend has begun funded by a Hudson River Estuary Grant.
  •  Restoration of the meadow at Esopus Bend is completed to allow for an expanded plant, bird and animal habitat.
  •  A wetlands trail was opened up from the Schroeder trail to the wetland area. Future plans include the construction of a blind and a boardwalk on the wetland trail to allow visitors access to the wetlands while protecting this environmentally sensitive area.
  •  A Hudson River Greenway Grant is funding three foot bridges over streams on the preserve. One of the three bridges is now completed. Volunteers with carpentry skills are needed to work on the remaining two bridges. Go to, Get Involved, and click on volunteer.
  •  The ECC Education Committee is collaborating with teachers and administrators in the Saugerties school district to provide opportunities for school groups to learn about our natural environment through field trips to Esopus Bend Nature Preserve.
