| Subject: | SPRING EARLY BIRDS Nature Walk on Saturday, May 3. | | Posted: | 04/19/08 at 08:58PM |
The first week in May is typically the start of the peak migration period for neotropical birds at this latitude, and early morning is the best time to see and hear recently arrived songbirds in their brilliant spring plumage. Come and explore Esopus Bend Nature Preserve’s woodlands, wetlands, and meadow to experience this annual rite of spring, identifying birds by sight and sound while pausing along the way to observe the diversity of plant and animal life that inhabit the preserve. Meet 7:00 a.m. in the Saugerties Village Beach parking lot on US Rte. 9W, just north of the Esopus Creek bridge, at the foot of Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties. Participants can carpool and stay for the duration, or drive to the preserve and leave whenever necessary. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them. Be prepared for wet, muddy trails, and dress according to weather conditions. Light rain often makes for excellent birding and nature observation, but heavy rain will cancel the walk. Children are welcome and encouraged, but please do not bring pets. Contact the field trip leader, Steve Chorvas mailto: schorvas@verizon.net for additional information or directions. This nature walk, sponsored by the Esopus Creek Conservancy, is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required.
| Subject: | SPRING WORK PARTY AT ESOPUS BEND NATURE PRESERVE on Sunday, April 20 | | Posted: | 04/10/08 at 10:53AM |
There’s work to be done at Esopus Bend and you can help! Come on Sunday, April 20 starting at 9:00 a.m. and join the volunteer work crew meeting at the Shady Lane entrance to the preserve. Volunteers will clean-up around the Shady Lane entrance, spread woodchips, extend the ditch and drop some woodchips along the lower section of the Schroeder Trail to solve a drainage problem in that area. We’ll use a tractor and trailer to move the woodchips and volunteers to spread them. ECC Stewardship Committee Co-chair Steve Chorvas will head up a small work group to make the railing for the South Bridge. What’s also needed are: shovels, rakes and wheel barrows. For directions to the preserve or any questions contact Chris Florsch at mailto:cflorsch@hotmail.com
| Subject: | VERNAL POOLS AT ESOPUS BEND, A Nature Walk on Saturday, April 5. | | Posted: | 03/31/08 at 09:09AM |
Esopus Creek Conservancy is offering an opportunity to enter the intimate living world of vernal pools on a nature walk with ecologist Spider Barbour on Saturday, April 5 starting at 1:00 p.m. at Esopus Bend Nature Preserve in Saugerties. The preserve contains several vernal pools teeming with biological activity this time of year. In early spring, amphibians awake from hibernation and head straight for wetlands and ponds where they engage in reproductive rituals. With luck, the wood frogs will be calling in the pools, and there will be egg masses of spotted salamanders, perhaps, larvae of marbled salamanders, and a few surprises. Meet at the Village of Saugerties Beach at the dead end of Partition Street. Since there is limited parking at Esopus Bend Nature Preserve, participants will car pool to the Edgewood and Kalina entrance to the preserve. This event is free and open to the public. Appropriate dress and footwear is recommended. Pre-registration is not required. For more information contact Susan Bolitzer at 845.247.0664 or susanbolitzer@gmail.com
